On the riverbed in the evening, Asu-nee was absentmindedly watching the flow of water without reading a book, which was unusual from her.

I quietly sat down one meter away from her as carefully as possible, so as not to disturb the somehow impenetrable atmosphere.

Her short cut, which suited her interesting and clear profile, was swaying gently in the wind. I could see the turquoise blue cords extending from her small, delicate ears. Apparently, she was listening to music.

As soon as Asu-nee noticed my presence, she took off the earphone in her left ear and gave a fresh smile.

“I’m just thinking about you.”

Just hearing her say that made my heart flutter a little.

“What are you listening to?”

I asked back while pretending to be calm. She closed the distance by a meter with her slender hands and hips, sitting next to me.

The arm that touched me was unimaginably warm and unreal.

Then, in a very natural way, she offered me the earphone she had just taken off. I took it and put it on my left ear.

Asu-nee liked to listen to old J-pop music. The song she was playing was about saying goodbye to a dear friend with a smile, believing that they would meet again ten years later.

“Hey, do you remember what happened ten years ago?” She asked me.

“Back then I was still in the early grades of elementary school. The most I remember is going to my grandma’s house every summer.”

“…I see.” Asu-nee gave a tickled laugh and continued. “Then can you imagine yourself ten years from now?”

“No way. I just know that I won’t be a professional baseball player. What about you, Asu-nee?”

A small head rested on my shoulder.

With the fragrant scent of the shampoo, I glanced over. Asu-nee was staring ahead at the darkening sky in the distance.

“I don’t know either. I wonder what I’ll become, or what I’ll be doing… Maybe I’ll be married by then.”

Her voice seemed to melt into a nostalgic melody.

“The person you choose will surely be a wonderful person.”

I said something uninteresting.

As if Asu-nee could see through that childish mind, she giggled. “Someone like you?”

The eyes and expressions that were looking up at me were already the usual Asu-nee.

“…Are you making fun of me?”

“Hehe, what do you think?”

“Damn you!”

She nimbly dodged my hand that was trying to grab her head, unplugged her headphones, grabbed her school bag, and ran briskly down the path along the bank.

“Onii-san, here~”

Like a child, I was chasing after her long shadow, hoping to stay in this moment forever.
